The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics is pleased to announce the establishment of the Juanita Simmons Scott Institute for Science and Mathematics Teaching. The mission of the Institute is to provide to developing, new and experienced teachers, resources and experiences that promote interest, discovery and love for science and mathematics. The Institute represents a new partnership with the South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS) and the University of South Carolina ’s College of Science and Mathematics’ Center for Science Teaching. The Institute celebrates Dr. Juanita Simmons Scott’s many years of work with science teachers as evidenced in the programs that she created to support their ongoing exploration of new ideas to capture young minds and generate interest in, and love for science and mathematics.
With the Institute’s hands-on science and mathematics seminars, laboratory discovery sessions, experiments and product demonstrations, special programs, and professional support activities, we hope to:
The School of STEM’s faculty and staff which include over a dozen former high school science and mathematics teachers are excited about expanding our existing relationships with the South Carolina Academy of Science, the over fifty (50) public schools and hundreds of science and mathematics teachers that are involved in our programs and affiliations such as Xtreme Technology, SCAS Middle and Elementary School Academy of Science (MESAS) Seminar, and Girls in Science.
